Vancouver Harbour Report, Feb 21/22

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jason @ 9:26 am

Well it was a little bit tough weekend. There was a couple of decent fish picked up this weekend but nothing to write home about. One of our fellow guides picked up a nice fish in the 16-18 pound range on Saturday morning in Vancouver. I had a short afternoon charter on Saturday afternoon. We fished the West Van tack, and hooked one nice chinook and a couple shakers. Sunday was tough as well with only a couple little guys to show for the day. Crabbing was solid with lots of nice keepers. Fishing has tapered off since the good fishing we had in January and early February. Just gotta wait for another push of winter chinook to roll through local waters. February and March are prime months for winter chinook.

I heard from a couple different sources that a pod of killer whales were charging around the harbour on Sunday. This could have been a contributing factor to the slow fishing this weekend. Hopefully they took care of a few of the problem seals in the bay while they were here.

Vancouver Harbour Report/February 19/20

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jason @ 8:30 pm

The brilliant weather has made for spring like fishing conditions over the last week. We managed to get on the water yesterday and today. On Thursday, Feb 19 we decided to make the run over to the Gulf Islands to do some winter chinook fishing and some prawning. There were a couple good reports from the Gulf Islands on Wednesday. The weather forecast looked good with light NW winds forecasted and reported Unfortunately, halfway across the Strait the wind puffed up to 25 knots and things got a little lumpy. We dropped the prawn traps of the Flat Top islands and ran up to the northeastern tip of Gabriola to make a long tack down the shoreline. The wind proved to be annoying so it cut our Gulf Island trip short. We pulled the prawn traps after a short soak (got some nice prawns) and headed back to Vancouver Harbour to fish for a few hours. Unfortunately nothing but a couple little guys hit our lines. We did end up with a limit of dungeness crab though. There were some fish hooked on the West Side of Bowen yesterday.
Today was a beauty of a day as well. The fishing was tough though with nothing but a few little guys to show for our efforts. Until another wave of fish hits the harbour we will likely be heading up to the backside of Bowen Island on our charters. The reports have been decent that way for the last week. There should be some fish in the harbour again soon as this time of year is usually solid for winter chinook.

Saturday Morning!

Saturday Morning!

Saturday's Keeper Chinook!!!!!

Saturday's Keeper Chinook!!!!!

The weekend was one of the best weather weekends we have had so far this year! We were blessed with brilliant sunshine and calm water. The fishing was a little on the slow side this weekend. On our charter on Saturday we fished the West Vancouver shoreline as well as the middle of the harbour. There was some bait showing throughout the morning. We managed to land a keeper chinook salmon on the high slack and miss another one a short time after. Other than that it was quiet. A couple decent fish were lost in the morning by a couple boats fishing the inner harbour as well. Today was tough nothing but a shaker and another light bite to show for the charter. Got lots of crabs though! Hopefully fishing will pick up now that this full moon has passed. February and March are typically prime time for winter chinook.

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report Feb 4

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 7:20 pm

What a beauty of a day out on the water! We were in t-shirts for part of the day! After yesterday’s slow fishing we were able to find a little more life this morning. The fishing was not as good as last week but we still managed to hook a few fish. We ended up landing a couple underize chinook and losing good legal fish . There was more bait around the inner harbour today than yesterday. We had our bites on coyotes behind flashers and single coyote spoons above a Kone Zone Daisy Chain. February is prime time in the harbour for winter chinook so hopefully we can get some good weather and good fishing!

Vancouver Fishing Report, Feb 3

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 5:32 pm

Could not find the fish or the bait this morning. The tide and the currents were perfect but it was a tough go for us this morning. We had a good hit that we missed mid morning on the slack tide but that was it. We will be out a few more times this week so hopefully a better report will follow. Fishing has been solid over the last few weeks so hopefully it is just an off day.
