April 25 Report

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 8:04 pm

A bit of a blustery day locally today. Too bad, because there has been some really good action of the south side of Bowen Island this week. Instead of fighting the chop and the wind, we decided to head up into Howe Sound and fish some flat water. Things started off well hooking a real solid fish on our first pass. Unfortunately, the leader snapped when the fish was just behind the boat. An hour later a decent fish hit one of the anchovies and after a good scrap of nice chinook was boated. We heard some good reports of some decent action off the south side of Bowen despite the nasty weather. We pulled the gear late morning as the wind dropped and did a long tack of the slash. We missed the bite and did not hit anything before calling it a day. Crabbing was awesome as usual in harbour. Should be a good couple weeks of fishing coming up. Hopefully the Northwesterly winds back off a bit to make things a little more comfortable out there.

April 23 Report

Another solid morning fishing Vancouver`s saltchuck. The wind stayed down long enough to land a couple nice fish off the south side of Bowen Island. The fish we picked up were between 70-110 feet on anchovy and hardware. Nice to see this consistent fishing continuing. There were a few other boats out there as well with similar results. A couple nice chinook from this morning!

Jeff had a great day on the water with his guests today. After a bit of a slower morning up in Howe Sound yesterday morning, he decided to try the south side of Bowen Island. It was a real good call. He dropped in and hooked up a double header right away. One of the fish was a bit undersize but the other one was 20 pounds, a beautiful fish. He continued to work the same area where he hit the first couple fish for the next few hours. Good thing he did because he landed 3 more legal fish between 9 and 14 pounds. So he ended up with 4 legal chinook and a bunch of crabs and prawns. Both boats are out in the morning hopefully the best fishing so far this spring keeps up.

A little slower on those quality fish we saw during in the sound yesterday. We still managed a nice 10 pound legal chinook and 3 undersize. Probably just an off day or we just could not find them. Crabbing was phenomemal in harbour and we got a few prawns as well. There was some decent action off the hump and around the QA yesterday so fishing looks like it is continuing to improve everywhere as per normal this time of year.april-18

We had another great trip into the sound today. Bon Chovy and our latest Grady, “VAN HERRING” were both out on charters today with good results. Jeff on “VAN HERRING” started off of the south side of Bowen after hearing a good report there last night. I headed straight into the sound on Bon Chovy. We trolled around for an hour before our first fish hit, a nice 14 pound chinook. After landing it we dropped into an undersized that was quickly released. An hour later we hooked into a real beauty and after a good scrap we boated a 21 pound chinook. Jeff came in from the south side of Bowen into the sound as the water was a little snotty. He trolled around with his guests for an hour before a real dandy hit. Unfortunately after a spirited fight the fish broke off. Fortunately the next fish stuck and his guests landed a nice 12 pound chinook. Crabbing and prawning was good as well. Back out tomorrow..hopefully the good fishing keeps going.

Vancouver Report April 16

Today we had one of the better charters so far this spring. Headed straight up into Howe Sound and started fishing around 9am. We dropped into a decent 11 pound chinook with only 2 of the 4 rods down. After we got re set we were into consistent action for the next 2 hours. We landed 2 more legal chinook and one undersize and missed 3 fish before noon. Pretty solid morning. The big one for the day taped out to be 17 pounds and was released to swim another day as we had enough fish in the box. Jeff came out to sea trial our latest Grady White for a few hours and managed to pick a couple nice chinook as well. Pretty solid day. We will see what tomorrow brings. We also got a bunch of crabs and some prawns. Pics to follow.

Had a beautiful bluebird day on the water today. The winds remained relatively light and we were able to fish a couple different areas. We started off the south side of Bowen first thing in the morning. We dropped the lines and were immediately surrounded by a pod of of 50-100 Pacific White Sided Dolphins. They were breaking the surface everywhere playing around. Quite an amazing sight to see so close to Vancouver. We fished for a couple hours and landed an undersize chinook at 120 feet on a chovy. After doing a few donuts out in the Strait, we headed into Howe Sound. We got a nice 15 pound chinook shortly after setting up and then enjoyed the scenery from then on in. We were hoping for the bite to come on like yesterday. On the way home we picked up our prawn and crab traps with good success.

Had a solid day up in Howe Sound today. Fishing was not fast and furious but the bites we got we capitalized on and ended up landed 3 chinook salmon, including a beautiful 19 pounder. We picked the fish up on anchovies down deep between 140-160 feet. We had most of our success a couple hours before the low slack tide today. We fished the end of the flood at the Cap with no bites. Crabbing was excellent as usual in the harbour.

Vancouver Fishing Report, April 4

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jason @ 9:35 am

Things are perking up off the south end of Bowen Island. The conditions were fabulous yesterday with no wind and brilliant sunshine. There was a handful of boats out there and most boats out there were into fish up to 20 pounds. The action was not fast and furious, but for everyone that put some time in hooked fish. We hooked 4 fish between 11am-3pm. Unfortunately we lost the 2 keepers we had on. One of the fish we lost looked like it was it really solid as we broke the mainline on him. We had our success on chovies and a green/glow coyote spoon. We ran our gear between 70-150 feet. This fishery is typically really good in April and May, quite often providing some of the best action of the year. Last year there was some great fishing in April for chinooks.
