VANCOUVER SALMON REPORT…..JULY 19/2009

We have had some ideal fishing conditions on our salmon charters over the last week in Vancouver. Hot sunny days with light winds have made for some picture perfect days on the water. Fishing has been pretty solid all in all for coho and the odd bigchinook along the West Vancouver shore line this past week. We had couple trips where we had 15-20 salmon hit the gear this week. On average we have been hooking 4-8 salmon a trip. What we have found this year is that the coho have been moving throughout Vancouver Harbour more than usual. We have landed hatchery coho off the Bell Buoy, the QB, Stanley Park, Dundarave, Fisheries, and the Cap Mouth. If it is slow moving around a bit might pay off. The West Vancouver fishery should continue to produce for the next couple months.

Now that we are getting into mid July we will start focusing more and more on the big chinook salmon that are showing up in local waters. Yesterday morning, July 18, a handful of big chinook salmon were hooked in the outer reaches of Vancouver Harbour. There were also some unconfirmed reports of fish off the Fraser Mouth. Last year the big chinook salmon fishery really caught fire in early August in Vancouver Harbour and off the mouth of the Fraser. It is looking like we should be in for solid big chinook fishing based on the good reports from the eastern Vancouver Island and Sooke area soon.

There have been some solid reports from the eastern shoreline of Gabriola Island this week. Some really nice fish up to 35 pounds have been landed. With some calm weather the Gulf Island make for an awesome day trip. We have not made it over there in the last few day but will likely head that way on our next 8 or 10 hour trip.

We are eagerly awaiting an announcement on sockeye. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is calling for an excellent return of roughly 12 million fish. We should know in the next week or two when we will get our opening. Sockeye are known to be the best eating of all the salmon. Also they can supply some excellent action with multiple hook ups at one time common.

The first pink salmon of the year were caught this week off of West Vancouver. These early 4-8 pound salmon are bound for the Seymour and Indian Rivers. There numbers will build in coming weeks supplementing the action off of West Vancouver. The massive Fraser River run of pinks will start in the middle of August.

Our boats are availble for Fireworks Charters over the next couple weeks! There is nothing like seeing the Symphony of Fire from the water. We can even fish for a few hours before anchoring up for the fireworks!

Give us a call to book a charter! The weather is amazing and the fishing has been consistent!

JULY 14 FISHING UPDATE

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 8:26 pm

We have had lots of trips out over the last few days with solid results on most charters. Somedays there are some slow stretches but persistence usually pays off with some decent hook ups. On average over the last few days we have been hooking 4-8 fish a charter. On Monday, July 13 we had a very active day on Bon Chovy with 20 fish hitting the gear on our full day charter. The fish were a mixture of hatchery and wild coho, undersize chinook, and mature chinook. We even were lucky enough to get a quadruple header on coho, landing 3 of them. Today the action slowed a bit but we brought fish back to the dock on both the Grady’s. Jeff has been on a hot streak on our new boat landing chinook up to 25 pounds back for the last 5 consecutive trips.

We have focused our efforts primarily off of West Vancouver, the Bell Buoy, and Sandheads. The coho have been cruising around Vancouver harbour this year quite a bit more than usual. Today we found coho off the Bell Buoy, Jericho, and the QB. We have hooked some decent chinook off the Bell and the Cap.

The weather looks great for the weekend. Give us a call to book a charter we still have availability on Saturday and Sunday.

JULY 11- VANCOUVER FISHING REPORT

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS, Uncategorized — Jason @ 5:31 pm

Fishing has been consistent over the last week for coho and chinook salmon in the Vancouver area. We have focused our efforts on the West Van shoreline on our shorter trips and the mouth of the Fraser on our longer 8 and 10 hour trips. The West Vancouver shoreline has been kicking out reasonable numbers of 4-9 pound coho and a few undersize and big chinook up to 30 pounds. Our latest Grady White, “Van Herring” picked up a nice chinook in the low 20’s this morning off the Capilano mouth and a decent chinook yesterday off the T-10. The coho have been hitting hootchies and anchovies while the chinooks have preferred bait. Howe Sound has also produced some nice chinook over the last week but you have to put lots of time in. If you are looking for consistent action Vancouver Harbour or the mouth of the Fraser is a better bet.

As we progress into July we will see fishing opportunities diversify and increase as big numbers of sockeye, pink, and big chinook salmon approach local waters. Pink salmon will start to show first off the West Vancouver shoreline in the next week or so as they make their way back to the Indian and Seymour Rivers. The Fraser River sockeye run is a dominant one this year with 12-14 million fish expected. There are rumours that we might be open for retention as early as late July. Sockeye can provide some amazing action, with multiple hook ups common at one time. Sockeye are also by far the best eating salmon out there. In addition to the late July/ August sockeye run, the big Fraser chinook and pink salmon will be present. Pink salmon will peak off the Fraser Mouth from the 3rd week of August to the second week of September. It should be an exciting summer of fishing if the runs materialize like expected.

We have 3 Grady White’s and our big 38 foot Uniflite ready for charter at the Westin Bayshore! Give us a call to book a charter! We are also offering our boats for charter for the Symphony of Fire. We can even combine a sunset salmon fishing session before anchoring up to watch the fireworks show. There is no better way to see the fireworks than on the water.

July 3 Fishing Update

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS, Uncategorized — Jason @ 10:24 pm

Finally the unusually persistent Northwest winds have backed off. All week we had do deal with some bumpy water on our charters. Fortunately there was enough fish around to make it worth while on most days. There is reasonable numbers of coho along the West Vancouver as well as some chinook up to 25 pounds. There even seems to be quite a few undersize feeder chinook salmon to add to the action on most days. We were able to pick up a few coho and a couple nice chinook in the middle of Vancouver Harbour this week. We fished up in Howe Sound on Wednesday of this week to avoid the wind but did not have much success. It seems to be pretty slow up that way, but that could change with the arrival of the Squamish Bound chinook salmon. Now that there is some good weather coming our way we will start venturing back out off the Fraser Mouth to target those big chinook salmon that we were fishing for before this weeks wind. Fishing should get back to normal now with the calm winds.

Vancouver Harbour Report, June 30

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 5:55 pm

Great day on the water this morning! We got an early start to beat the wind. We started trolling in the middle of Vancouver Harbour where we had some good success recently. The wind stayed down long enough to land a nice 23 pound chinook, a coho, and a few undersize chinook. We also lost a solid chinook and did not connect on a cas well. We did a tack down the West Van shoreline to finish off the day as the wind picked up. We lost a coho of the rock jetties before picking up the gear to head back to the Westin Bayshore. A couple boats reported some good coho action off Ambelside during the morning.

BON CHOVY FISHING REPORT-END OF JUNE

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 5:13 pm

Well what a good stretch of fishing we had for the second half of June. We had a couple of tough charters, but all in all it was one of the better months of June we have seen for quite some time. The coho salmon rolled in very good numbers in the second and third weeks of June and provided local anglers with some real good action. On a few trips we hooked over a dozen coho off the West Vancouver shoreline. The coho fishing slowed down a little bit during the latter part of last week with the rainfall we had. Things have improved over the last day or so with more and more coho showing. Intermingled with the coho there have been some nice chinook mixed in as well. Both our charters on Sunday both landed both coho and chinook off the West Vancouver shoreline.

Jason Tonelli on the Salty Dog and Preston on the Seastar were both able to make it out off the Fraser River mouth on Saturday to target some of the big returning chinook salmon that have been showing recently. Both boats got into a good number of fish. Most of them were jack chinook but both boats landed chinook in the mid 20’s and lost a big fish each. The Fraser Mouth is always a good bet in the summer as the fish stage for the river.

Vancouver Harbour has had some nice fish as well. We have landed a few coho, undersize chinook, and the odd big chinook. This morning Bon Chovy landed a chinook in the mid twenties in Vancouver harbour.

It looks like a very promising stretch of fish coming up with solid coho fishing and some nice chinooks thrown in as well.

Give us a call or email to book a charter!

VANCOUVER HARBOUR REPORT. JUNE 24

Filed under: FISHING REPORTS — Jason @ 3:38 pm

We had an excellent charter this morning!!!! The coho salmon were very cooperative with lots of bites to be had. The West Van shoreline was stacked with bait and the coho were aggressively feeding on small herring and crab larvae. The fish were scattered from Navy Jack all the way down to the research center. It did not seem to matter to much where you fished as long as you were tacking in 15-70 feet of water. We had the bulk of our success on hootchies fished fairly shallow and trolled fast. We had good action throughout the morning with 14 salmon hitting the gear. We did not land them all as some fish were lost to seals and some just didn’t hook up. Our guests still went home with some nice coho for the bbq. There was a couple other charter boats out as well who also had good success. This years coho fishery has been the best we have seen in quite a few years, especially this early in the season.
