VANCOUVER WINTER SALMON REPORT...DEC 15

Winter chinook fishing has picked up in Vancouver Harbour over the last 10 days. A lot of the fish are still just under the legal size limit, but there are some nice legal fish thrown in the mix. There has been more legal fish around in the last few days especially. On Sunday, December 13 we lost a couple of very solid winter chinook and hooked another 8 more smaller winter chinook in the 20-25 inch range.

There has been LOTS of bait in Vancouver Harbour, especially in the middle. We have been working Jericho, the mile markers, mid harbour, and the West Vancouver shoreline. We have been getting the majority of our action on coyote spoons run behind green and chartreuse flashers. It is the same old story right now...you need to find the bait to find the fish. This time of year is definately the time to watch your sounder. The winter springs have been in the bottom 1/3 of the water column. We have hooked a few fish as much as 40 feet off the bottom over the last few days. Winter chinook salmon are known to be very close to the bottom in the winter.

Howe Sound has still been producing some nice fish as well. The usual spots on the back side of Bowen Island have been best.

The commercial dungeness crab season finally closed iin Vancouver Harbour on the 1st of December so crabbing is is picking back up. We are dropping crab traps on every charter right now.

Now thru March is the time when winter chinook fishing is at its best in Vancouver Harbour! Check out our blog at www.bonchovy.com/blog for frequent winter fishing updates.

Give us a call to book a winter chinook salmon charter. We are taking reservations during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Ask about our great winter rates!!!

BON CHOVY FISHING REPORT, DEC 01/09

Fishing has picked up for winter chinook in local waters!! Fish up to 20 pounds have been landed in howe sound over the last couple weeks. This past week has been the best of the winter salmon season so far. It has not been non stop action but persistence and paying attention to where the bait is hanging out has produced some good fish.

Howe sound has definately produced more quality fish than vancouver harbour over the last couple weeks. The harbour has had lots of shakers, the odd undersize, and the very odd legal fish.

We have been running coyote and gypsy spoons close to the bottom. Productive depths for us have been between 120-170 feet on the downrigger. As per usual in the winter, finding bait is very important.

VANCOUVER SALMON REPORT....OCTOBER 21/2009

Well after a wet few days it is pretty safe to say that the West Vancouver chinook fishery is done for the year. The high water in the Capilano River has likely sucked most of the staging fish upstream to finish their business. This past fall we definately had a better fishery than we had over the last 3 years. The run seemed to peak from the 10th to the 30th of September. Although there were a number of active days in October as well. This year we saw an incredible amount of jack chinook. Great news for the next couple years as they are often an indicator of ocean survival.

Now we are coming into another exciting time of year.........WINTER CHINOOK season!!! These chinook salmon are feeding fish that move into local waters to feed on the typically abundant baitfish. These fish are not the biggest of the year but are very scrappy and great eating. The nice thing about winter chinook is they are actively feeding..unlike the fall mature fish which are little more fussy and tide biters. The first reports from Howe Sound of fish up to 16 pounds have started to trickle in. Numbers of fish should continue to build from now on in. We have a few trips out this weekend to target winter chinook salmon. We will likely fish Vancouver Harbour and the backside of Bowen Island.

Winter chinook fishing is often at its very best in February. If you are in town for the 2010 VANCOUVER OLYMPIC GAMES or have friends in town it is great time of year for winter chinook salmon and dungeness crabs.

BON CHOVY FISHING REPORT...SEPT 23/09

Well the West Vancouver chinook fishery is now in full swing! We have seen some good numbers of mature chinook up to 30 pounds, jack chinook, the odd pink, and the odd hatchery and wild coho.

The chinook run off the West Vancouver shoreline peaks from mid September to mid October. We have had some really good numbers of hook ups over the last week on our charters. Last week we had 5 straight days of 8 hour charters where we were able to fish the entire length of the flood tide from the low slack to the high slack. We had a few days where we had up to 15 fish hit the gear during the course of the tide. Now is a really good time to extend your fishing time a bit to catch the whole flood tide. A lot the hook ups we were getting during the early part of last week were jack chinook. As the week progressed more and more mature fish moved in. On average we are getting 3-7 hook ups a trip. On Friday evening, Sept 18, Bon Chovy kept 4 nice chinook up to 26 pounds, released 5 jacks and lost a few fish. On average we are getting 3-7 hook ups a trip. What we have noticed this year more than previous years is how quickly the bite goes on and off. The fishing off West Van has been better this year than the last couple years but you have to put your time in to make sure you are there when the bite happens. There has been as many a 3 or 4 periods of good activity during a flood tide recently. Bait is the only way to go right now!

As we progress October we will see the West Vancouver chinook fishing continue as well as some more opportunity to catch some nice bright chum in English Bay as well as off the Fraser Mouth. By the end of October the first winter chinook will be around in Howe Sound.

Give us a call to experience some quality fishing minutes from our dock location at the Westin Bayshore in Downtown Vancouver.

VANCOUVER FISHING REPORT...SEPT 9/2009

Well, some real nice chinook salmon up to 38 pounds rolled into Vancouver waters over the last few days. We had some consistent results for chinook salmon avering in the 22-27 pound range.

We have been finding the fish throughout Vancouver Harbour and off the Fraser River Mouth. The flood tide has been productive on the north side of Vancouver Harbour and the mouth of the Fraser and the ebb tide has been productive on the south side of the harbour. These big chinook salmon seem to move around with the tides right now as they are milling around making their approach to local rivers. A lot of these fish are Fraser bound. As we get later in September and October most big fish are Capilano bound chinook salmon.

We are running bait exclusively now! In the late summer and fall bait is by far the best option. We have found fish from 30-80 feet on the riggers.

There are still pinks off the mouth of the Fraser. Some poor weather over the weather kept us from targetting them though!!

From now until mid to late October is Vancouver's prime time for big chinook!! Vancouver is fortunate to have good fishing for big fish into the fall!

Aug 22 Fishing Report....Vancouver

Well the pinks have hit local waters in some excellent numbers over the last couple days!!!! While fishing for big chinook in English Bay over the last couple days the feisty pinks were keeping things active. We have been running anchovy teaser heads with a little bit of red on them and they have been keeping the rods moving. Over the last couple days we have been confined to English Bay due to the winds. We have landed some nice chinook up to 25 pounds, good numbers of pinks, some sockeye(released) and a couple coho.

Our focus right now is the big chinook that are in local waters. The nice thing about this time of year is the other species of salmon that keep things active while waiting for a big chinook to bite. Today the wind settled down and boats ventured south down to the Fraser Mouth and found some big chinook salmon.

We have been running bait exclusively for these big chinooks!! Big white and glow hootchies will also take fish but you can never go wrong with a nicely rolled anchovy at this time of year.

The next couple months is prime time for big chinook in Vancouver. The Fraser Mouth, Vancouver Harbour, and the Cap Mouth are all good bets. In amongst the chinook there should be millions of pinks as well.

Should be an active stretch of fishing coming up. It is a great time to get the kids out and get them into some pinks and big springs.

Give us a call to book a charter! The weather is amazing and the fishing has been consistent!

AUGUST 4 FISHING REPORT

BIG CHINOOK ARE HERE!!!!!!

Well our big chinook fishery is starting right on scedule. We have had consistent results on big fish almost daily now. This week alone we have had 5 fish near or over 30 pounds!!! Jay Tonelli on the Salty dog landed a beauty off the Fraser mouth on Saturday morning that was 33.5 pounds. We have had our success on these big fish in a variety of locations. The Sandheads, the T 10, the Bell Buoy, and the Cap Mouth have all been good to us this week. These fish do move around so persistence is required at times. Bait has been by far our best producer this week. Big chinook in the summer and fall almost always prefer bait over artificials. Having said that a white or glow hootchie always takes a few. As we progress into August, September, and early October we expect numbers of big chinook to continue to build and provide us with some of the most exciting fishing of the year. Last year the fishery really took off on the 8th of August. Looks like we are following the same pattern.

In addition to the big chinook, there has been coho and pinks off West Vancouver. Last night, Aug 3 we had some decent action of West Van, hooking a few pinks, a couple coho, and 2 big chinook! The pinks we are catching now are primarily fish bound for the Indian and Seymour River. Soon the massive Fraser pink salmon run will be here and they should be everywhere. We have caught some sockeye incidentally while fishing for chinook, but they are closed for retention as of right now. We are keeping our fingers crossed for an opening..

If you are looking for a quick fishing get away. Let us set you up with a cabin on Bowen Island or the Gulf Islands. With the close proximity of the Fraser River mouth to the island we can put together a 2 day/1 night fishing package together very easily.

Please check out our blog at www.bonchovy.com/blog for big fish pictures and frequent fishing updates.

VANCOUVER SALMON REPORT.....JULY 19/2009

We have had some ideal fishing conditions on our salmon charters over the last week in Vancouver. Hot sunny days with light winds have made for some picture perfect days on the water. Fishing has been pretty solid all in all for coho and the odd bigchinook along the West Vancouver shore line this past week. We had couple trips where we had 15-20 salmon hit the gear this week. On average we have been hooking 4-8 salmon a trip. What we have found this year is that the coho have been moving throughout Vancouver Harbour more than usual. We have landed hatchery coho off the Bell Buoy, the QB, Stanley Park, Dundarave, Fisheries, and the Cap Mouth. If it is slow moving around a bit might pay off. The West Vancouver fishery should continue to produce for the next couple months.

Now that we are getting into mid July we will start focusing more and more on the big chinook salmon that are showing up in local waters. Yesterday morning, July 18, a handful of big chinook salmon were hooked in the outer reaches of Vancouver Harbour. There were also some unconfirmed reports of fish off the Fraser Mouth. Last year the big chinook salmon fishery really caught fire in early August in Vancouver Harbour and off the mouth of the Fraser. It is looking like we should be in for solid big chinook fishing based on the good reports from the eastern Vancouver Island and Sooke area soon.

There have been some solid reports from the eastern shoreline of Gabriola Island this week. Some really nice fish up to 35 pounds have been landed. With some calm weather the Gulf Island make for an awesome day trip. We have not made it over there in the last few day but will likely head that way on our next 8 or 10 hour trip.

We are eagerly awaiting an announcement on sockeye. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is calling for an excellent return of roughly 12 million fish. We should know in the next week or two when we will get our opening. Sockeye are known to be the best eating of all the salmon. Also they can supply some excellent action with multiple hook ups at one time common.

The first pink salmon of the year were caught this week off of West Vancouver. These early 4-8 pound salmon are bound for the Seymour and Indian Rivers. There numbers will build in coming weeks supplementing the action off of West Vancouver. The massive Fraser River run of pinks will start in the middle of August.

Our boats are availble for Fireworks Charters over the next couple weeks! There is nothing like seeing the Symphony of Fire from the water. We can even fish for a few hours before anchoring up for the fireworks!

Give us a call to book a charter! The weather is amazing and the fishing has been consistent!

BC Salmon Fishing Vancouver Fishing Guides Vancouver Sport Caught Chinook Salmon

The Coho fishery in Vancouver Harbour is in full swing!!! Excellent numbers of 3-7 pound coho have been stacking up along the West Vancouver shoreline. The coho are actively feeding on jack herring and dungeness crab larvae. This fishery will continue in coming weeks as waves of fresh coho push in from Georgia Strait. It is great to see such good numbers of coho in the harbour after last years poor coho fishery. Some boats have been hooking up to 15 coho a morning when the bite is on. The coho have been active throughout the day. We have good success on light coloured hootchies, anchovies, and small spoons.

Not to many boats have been targetting chinook over the last week as the coho fishing has been so good. There have been some good reports of big chinook off the Five Fingers and the Gulf Islands over the last few days. There has not been too many reports from the Fraser Mouth this week either. The Fraser Mouth was producing good numbers of chinooks up to 35 pounds last week. It is a spot that is definately worth a try again as there is some big fish heading up the Fraser right now.

As we progress into July even more areas will produce salmon with more big chinook, pinks, and Fraser sockeye entering local waters. It is looking like the whole British Columbia coast is benefiting from productive ocean conditions.

JUNE 17 FISHING REPORT

The mouth of the Fraser River heated up this week for chinooks up to 30 pounds. Great to see as the local fishing had been tough over the last couple weeks. There has been a good mix of mature chinooks, jacks, and undersize fish. The fish have been hitting primarily anchovies from 60-120 feet on the downriggers.

In addition to the Fraser Mouth fishery there has been some nice fish over on the far side of Georgia Strait. The Five Fingers, Thrasher, and Gabriola have had some good periods of activity. We were off the Five Fingers on the weekend and had some good success. However now that there is fish close to Vancouver we will likely be spending less time over there.

The West Vancouver shoreline is seeing a few early coho and the odd chinook. The fishery should really pick up in the next week or two. There has been the odd chinook in Howe Sound as well. Howe Sound usually gets going for chinook in late June through July.

We just purchased another Grady White Gulfstream. It should be in the water by next week. So now we have 3 Grady Whites and our 38 foot Uniflite ready for charter at our dock location. Give us a call to book a charter. It looks like it is going to be a good season based on early indications.

JUNE 1 Vancouver Fishing Update

This summer weather has made for some amazing days on the water!! Just have to make sure that you pack some sunscreen as the rays our pretty intense. This warm weather has expectedly put the Fraser River in full freshet. This has put a damper on the fishing in local waters over the last 10 days. Bites were at times tough to come by. HOWEVER, the Gulf Islands like usual from May to July have continued to fish very well. Yesterday, May 31, there was a great bite off the east side of Gabriola Island. The boats that were there all hooked a good number of fish in a short period of time. The fish that have been getting picked up in the Gulf Islands have been nice ones in the 12-25 pound range. The key to success over on the far side is to have reasonably light winds. So far this May we been successful bringing Chinook salmon back to the dock on every Gulf Island trip. The Gulf Islands will our number one choice for the next couple weeks. More options open up locally with the arrival of the big Squamish chinooks and the West Vancouver coho and chinook in coming weeks..

Areas that have been producing on the east side of Gabriola Island have been the Grande, Thrasher Rock, the Flat Tops, and further north towards Entrance Island. A lot of the fish have been offshore a little more than normal. However, yesterday there were indications that the fish may have moved into the beach where they usually are. The fish we have picked up have been quite deep down 90-190 feet on the riggers. Anchovies have been the best for us, but some guys are doing well on spoons and hootchies

Locally fishing has been a little tougher with the odd fish taken off the Bell Buoy, Hole in the Wall, Tunstall/3rd marker and Grace Islands.

Soon our summer season will be upon us and early indications look like it should be a good one. The pre season forecasts look good for sockeye (12 million returning to the local waters), pinks(15 million returning to local waters) , coho, and summer and fall Chinook.

We have done some re shuffling down on the docks down at the Westin Bayshore. We now have 3 Grady Whites from 23-27 feet and a 38 Uniflite moored and ready for charter at our dock location at the Ocean Adventure Center. Jason Tonelli , the owner of Pacific Angler has joined us at the Westin with his 27 foot Grady White Sailfish and his years of fresh and saltwater fishing experience. A great addition to the dock!!!

We also welcome our new neighbours , Prince of Whales .They will be offering high speed eco tours out of the Westin Bayshore on their speedy 12 person zodiacs. Sounds like a great way to spend a couple hours. www.princeofwhales.com

Please call or email us to book a Vancouver fishing charter. The Gulf Islands are at their best right now! We have 4 boats ready to go at our docks now that are perfect for larger corporate groups and derbies. We will also be offering our boats for charter during the Symphony of Fire in late July and early August.

Downtown Vanouver Fishing Report, May 11/09

The chinook fishing off the south end of Bowen Island has continued to be very good this week. We have focused our efforts around the "HUMP" over the last 5 days with good success. On Friday, May 8 fishing was amazing with 10 good fish hitting the gear on Bon Chovy in the morning. The fish we have been landing have been very healthy with an average size of 15 pounds. There have been some reports of fish up to 30 pounds landed recently in local waters. The largest fish we have landed this week is 21 pounds.

The fish have been hitting anchovies, greenish hootchies, and green/glow spoons. We have been running anchovies almost exclusively now. Productive depths have ranged from 60-130 feet. The fishery off the south end of Bowen Island is one of the most productive chinook fisheries of the year. Having said that it is a big area so on some days you have do some searching before fish are found.

Crabbing has continued to be very good in the Vancouver Harbour. Traps are dropped on every fishing charter.

Reports from the Gulf Islands have been encouraging over the last week. With the good numbers fish over on our side of the strait it looks like we should be in for a strong fishery over there this spring and early summer. The Gulf Islands typically offer some great chinook fishing from May to July. 8-10 hour charters as well as good weather are needed to fish the Gulf Islands.

We are offering our 2 day fishing package to the Gulf Islands right now. This package includes waterfont acoomodation in the Gulf Islands and 2, 10 hour days of fishing. This package starts at $579.00 Cdn/person. The fishing in the Gulf Islands this time of year is typically some of the best on the south coast. Call or email for more details.

May 5 Vancouver Fishing Report

The chinook salmon fishery off the south end of Bowen Island is in full swing!!! Some great fishing took place on the weekend with some BIG fish thrown in the mix to keep things really interested. There was a handful of fish in the 20's caught and a few in the 29-35 pound range caught as well. We did not land of these big fish on the weekend but it is nice to know that there is good potential to hook into one of this size. We encourage catch and release on these "BIG" early chinook salmon as they have had a tough go over the last few years. There is good numbers of chinook salmon in the 10-20 pound range to take home for the bbq.

We have been getting most of our fish a little further offshore of Bowen than last week. We have been focusing our efforts anywhere from 1-6 miles off of Cowans and Roger Curtis. We have been running primarily anchovies from 50-140 feet. These fish are in pockets and on some days lots of water has to be covered to locate these feeding chinook.

The fishery off the south end of Bowen Island should last for another month before we have to follow them over towards the Gulf Islands. The Gulf Islands typically really turn on later this month and fish very well into early July.

Vancouver Harbour can produce very well in May as well. Last May and early June we had some excellent fishing off of Jericho and Spanish Banks. It should be holding fish now as well.

Crabbing has been fantastic with traps dropped on every charter.

Call us to book a spring salmon charter. Our spring fishery is at its best right now!

Vancouver Fishing Report, April 21/2009

Good numbers of chinook salmon have shown up in the Vancouver! We have had the most consistent week of fishing we have had so far this year!

The chinook salmon we have been getting have been up to 21 pounds with 13-15 pounds being the average size. Pretty solid for April.

The south side of Bowen Island, upper Howe Sound, and the QA marker have all been kicking out good numbers of fish over the last week. Productive depths have been between 50-120 feet off the south side of Bowen Island and a little deeper in Howe Sound. We have been having the bulk of our success on anchovies. Having said that some guys have been doing well on green hootchies and coyotes.

On another positive note there was a good bite just north of Gabriola Island yesterday so hopefully it won't be long till that side gets going.

Crabbing has been phenomenal in the harbour and traps are dropped on every trip.

Time is running out for our promotion during the month of April! We are offering 8 hour trips for the price of a half day trip. The 8 hour rate for 1-2 people is $450.00 and $495.00 for 3-5 people. These rates are for local charters only and do not include licences and taxes. This is by far our best fishing deal of the year! These rates are only good until April 30/2009.

Vancouver Fishing Report, March 28/2009

Reports of decent sized chinook salmon continued throughout this last week. Chinooks up to 20 pounds were landed in Vancouver Harbour, Howe Sound, and the South Side of Bowen Island.

We have spent of our time working the West Vancouver shoreline recently and have had success, highlighted by a 17 pound chinook. We have been running primarily hardware recently, but we will start running more and more bait as we get into April.

April typically marks the start of the chinook fishery off the South Side of Bowen Island, the QA marker, and the Bell Buoy. This fishery can be one of the most active of the year with chinook salmon in the 8-25 pound range. Having said that Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound can be just as good in April as well.

Crabbing has been phenomenal in Vancouver Harbour and traps are dropped on every charter for our guests.

We are running a great promotion during the month of April! We are offering 8 hour trips for the price of a half day trip. The 8 hour rate for 1-2 people is $450.00 and $495.00 for 3-5 people. Vancouver Saltwater Report, March 16/2009

Fishing has perked up this week in Vancouver Harbour. The fish that were picked up this week were nice ones in the 12-17 pound range. Unfortunately the unseasonably cold weather kept most of us off the water over the weekend. Temperature's are supposed to get back to normal this week which will be nice.

We had our success in the inner around the QB marker and along the West Vancouver shoreline. There should be fish throughout English Bay. There has been reasonable amounts of bait in the harbour. The key to finding these feeding chinook salmon is locating bait. We have been running coyote spoons exclusively as of late. Hootchies and anchovies will pick up fish as well.

As we progress into April we usually see some good activity off the south side of Bowen Island and the Gulf Islands . Last spring we had some really solid chinook fishing. Lets hope it is just as good this year.

We are now booking overnight trips to the Gulf Islands! The Gulf Islands fishing package is one of the most convenient and affordable fishing packages in BC right now. Included is 2 full days of fishing and accomodation at a seaside cabin! Packages start at $485 US/$579 Cdn per person!

BON CHOVY FISHING REPORT, MARCH 3/09

The local saltchuck has had some nice quality fish around. Unfortunately, you have to put your time in to get them. The good bump of winter chinook that came into Vancouver Harbour and Howe Sound in January and early February have dispersed and now some days require a lot of searching. This past weekend there was a few nice fish taken in Howe Sound and a few nice fish taken in the outer reaches of Vancouver Harbour. The fish that have been getting picked up have been on the standard winter chinook gear. Coyote spoons (green, white and chrome), anchovies, and hootchies (white, glow, purple haze, splatterbacks) are all good bets this time of year. The bulk of the chinook are being caught in the bottom third of the water column like usual. As the water warms and the clarity decreases more and more chinook salmon will suspend in the mid water.

As we progress into the spring we should see the action pick up in the Strait of Georgia and the Gulf Islands. The springtime angling in Vancouver can be some of the best of the year for chinook salmon. The Gulf Island are typically really good in May, June, and July.

Downtown Vancouver Fishing Report, Jan 27

Winter chinook season has finally gotten going in local Vancouver waters. After a slow start to the winter chinook season we have finally been getting consistent results in Vancouver Harbour. The average size of the keepers we have been getting so far this January has also been above average over previous years. We have had some good success in the inner harbour with chinook salmon up to fifteen pounds. The bulk of our success has come from the freighters and the West Vancouver shoreline. We have averaged 3-7 hook ups a trip over our last 6 outings. We even hooked and landed a hatchery coho yesterday, January 26th. It was about 2 pounds and must be one of the early coho that head up the Capilano River in the spring. Hopefully a good sign of things to come.

There has been some large chinook salmon up to 29 pounds picked up over the last few days in Howe Sound. One boat landed a pair of beauties on Sunday, 23 and 29 pounds. Late January and February quite often produce some real quality chinook salmom.

The usual assortment of winter chinook gear has been working. Coyotes, chovies, and hootchies with shades of green, yellow and black have been our favourites this week. The fish have been coming from 80-120 feet on the riggers.

Crabbing has been fantastic with pots being dropped on every trip!

Downtown Vancouver Fishing Report Jan 12 2009

The weather over the last month has made it very tough to get out on the water. Cold temps, rain, and wind have plagued Vancouver. It looks like the thaw is well on its way and by next week they are forecasting warmer temps with sunshine. We will be getting out on the water a lot more now that everything is getting back to normal.

Accurate fishing reports were a little tough to come by over the last few weeks as only a few boats made it out on the water. There were a only few guys fishing in Vancouver Harbour and up in Howe Sound. The more promising reports came from inner Vancouver Harbour. Fishing up in Howe Sound was limited due to the harsh Squamish winds associated with the last cold front. Fishing has gotten back to normal up that way as well and it will just be a matter of time before some consistent reports to start rolling in from the Sound. I did hear of some success by one of our local guides there this week!

I fished West Van for a few hours by myself yesterday and was able to landed a couple chinook salmon that were just a little shy of the legal limit. I missed a couple good hits as well. Another regular beside picked up a nice 12 pounder as well. Fishing in Vancouver Harbour should be good throughout the rest of the winter. Winter chinook fishing usually peaks in Vancouver Harbour in January and February. Winter chinook are always looking for bait. Find the bait and you are likely to find some winter chinook salmon. Good areas to focus on for winter chinooks are Jericho, the QB, West Vancouver, Tunstall Bay, and Hutt Island. Fishing this time of year is usually most productive trolling close to bottom. For the most part winter chinook salmon do not suspend in mid water. Coyote spoons, anchovies, and hootchies will all work for winter chinook. We like to focus our efforts in 90-120 feet of water this time of year in the harbour. Crabbing has been really good so far this winter. Traps are dropped on all charters in the winter and spring!
