Bon Chovy Fishing Report, Dec 10/2007This winter weather has brought in some pretty good numbers of winter chinook salmon to our area over the last 10 days. We have had a few really active charters recently! We have been hooking anywhere from 5-10 winter chinook salmon in the 4-12 pound per charter. There has been lots of baitfish in Vancouver harbour and its seems to be holding the feeding chinook quite well. You have to work for keepers still as most fish are in the 20-24 inch range. The most productive area for us has been around the QB marker and in the freighters in the middle of the harbour. The key is to find the bait. Once you find the bait, more often than not you start getting hook-ups. We are running primarily coyote spoons and hootchies now as the fish are extremely active. It is more important to find the bait and the fish rather than worrying about the gear you are running! Productive depths have been from 90-120 feet on the downrigger. We are running our lures behind flashers. The backside of Bowen has also had a few good days as well! Give us a call and ask us about our great winter rates! Tight Lines Jeff/Jason BON CHOVY FISHING REPORT NOV 21/2007The local winter chinook salmon fishing has been reasonable over the last few weeks. We have been averaging 3-7 hook ups per charter in the 4 – 15 pound range. On most days you have to work through the smaller salmon to get a keeper. We have focused our efforts in English Bay in 90-120 feet of water. We have had the majority of our hook ups around the QB marker. Productive depths have been from 75 feet to the bottom. We had our success using army truck hootchies, watermelon, glow, and army truck coyotes all behind flashers. There have been some reports of winter chinook from the back side of Bowen Island as well. There seems to be less action, but good quality out that way. The winter spring season is just starting now and should really get going into December, January, and February. Call us to book a winter chinook charter! Jason/Jeff Bon Chovy Fishing Report, Oct 22/2007The winter chinook season has started early for us this year! We had a couple really encouraging charters in English Bay over the last few days. On Saturday, October 20 we hooked 6 decent winter chinook in the 5-15 pound range as well as a few smaller ones. This fishery should continue to get stronger as we move into November and , December. There were also a few reports of winter chinooks being taken up in Howe Sound as well. These winter fish are actively feeding and typically offer some of the best fishing of the year. The key to success is to find the bait. The southern shoreline of English Bay had lots of juvenille herring in 90-150 feet of water over the weekend. In English Bay we tend to concentrate our efforts in 90-140 feet of water doing long tacks looking for bait and pockets of winter springs. We will try and concentrate on an area if we see bait on the screen and are getting hits. Early in the winter chinook fishery in English Bay we consistently troll between the QB marker, Jericho, and the mile markers with success. Winter springs will hit anchovies, spoons, and hootchies. Some of our favourite lures are the green/glow and cop car coyote spoons, purple haze and green splatter back hootchies, and anchovies in green/glow heads. Call us for some of the best action of the year! Just bring your sweaters and some hot coffee! Tight lines! Bon Chovy Fishing Report, Oct 12, 2007Fishing recently has been quite challenging so far this October! Typically, early to mid October is one of the most consistent periods for mature chinook in the 15-25 pound range. So far this month there has only been a couple of reasonable days. This past week we have had to work really hard for 1 or 2 hook ups per charter. The fish we have hooked this week have been right off the bottom in 85-110 feet of water off the Capilano Mouth and Ambelside. Anchovies and herring have been equally productive. Fish should continue to push in hopefully in better numbers for the next couple weeks. With a lot of runs being late this year, the Capilano run could follow suit. On a positive note, we landed a couple 3-5 pound winter chinook this week. The winter chinook fishery should start to get going in another month or so. The winter fishery is one of the most consistent and under-rated fisheries in Vancouver. Call us to book a fall or winter chinook charter!!!!! Good luck Bon Chovy Fishing Report, Sept 25, 2007We shifted our focus over to the Capilano Mouth and the West Van shoreline this past week. We have had reasonable success trolling anchovies and whole herring from 40 feet down to the bottom. We have landed mature chinook up to 25 pounds, jack chinook, and hatchery coho over the last 4 days. This fishery should continue to improve over the next couple weeks as the Capilano fish really start stack up off the river mouth. We have seen quite a few jacks recently so the main run should be right behind them. The key to this fishery is to fish the flooding tide! There are still some big chinook being caught off the T-10, Bell Buoy, and the Sandheads. It tends to be a little more hit or miss out there however. I Call us to book a charter for these big chinooks. The fishery off West Van usually peaks between Sept 25 and Oct 21. Tight lines Jason Bon Chovy Fishing Report, Sep 13, 2007The chinook fishing here in Vancouver continues to be productive. After a lull in the action in early September, fish are being caught consistently off the Bell Buoy. We have been hooking 1-4 nice chinook a tide along with the odd coho and pink salmon. Anchovies have by been the ticket for us between 45-100 feet on the downriggers. The fish have been averaging in the 15-25 pound range with the odd bigger one. We had a reasonable day off the Cap this week and managed one in the high teens and one in the low thirties. Fishing off the Cap should really start to get going at the end of the month. With these big chinooks around we are getting pretty booked up, especially on weekends. Give us a call if you want to set up a charter during the prime time chinook fishery. Tight Lines Jeff/Jason BON CHOVY VANCOUVER FISHING REPORT, SEPT 01/2007BIG SPRINGS ARE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fishing for big chinook has been really consistent over the last week. We have hooked big chinook on every charter except for one over the past 10 days. The fish have been averaging between 20-35 pounds. The fish have been hitting anchovies and herring behind flashers. The fishery started in Mid August of the T-10. Over the last week we have seen fish being picked up off the Bell Buoy, Point Atkinson and the middle of the harbour. Productive depths have ranged from 60-120 on the rigger. Tide changes have proved the most productive. We are starting to hit more and more pinks off the Fraser as well. West Van is still kicking out fish as well. There has been little pressure over there. Fishing for the Fraser bound chinook should continue till the third week of September. Then the Capilano chinooks should roll in! Should be a good fall for big chinook! Call us for prime late September and early October dates! Jeff/Jason Bon Chovy Fishing Report August 21, 2007Fishing has gotten even more exciting this week. Some extremely nice fish have rolled in over the last week!! Jeff picked up a 32 pounder as well as a 33 pounder yesterday morning of the T-10 marker. This morning he picked up a couple in the mid twenties as well. The fish have been hitting anchovies from 50-110 feet on the downriggers. Definately the best quality fishing we have seen this year. Other boats have been doing well too! The fish have been averaging between 18-35lbs. The test fishery in Juan de Fuca Straits have shown real good numbers of chinooks and pinks this week so there should be more fish on the way! West Van is still producing fish as well. Coho, pinks, and chinook are being hit of the Pink Palace down to the Cap Mouth. Chovies and white hootchies have been the ticket. The Gulf Islands have been really good as well. The Grande, Thrasher and Whalebone have all been solid. It is looking like we should be in for a good spell of quality chinook fishing from now until mid October. Call us to take advantage of the weather and the big fish. This week we have Wednesday the 22nd and Sunday the 26th open. Jeff/Jason Bon Chovy Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report August 7, 2007Fishing off the West Vancouver continues to produce good numbers of coho, pinks, and legal and undersize chinook. With the dry weather the fishing should continue to be solid for the next few weeks. We released a handful of sockeye this week as well. We are hoping to get an opening on them in the next week or two. We have been running white hootchies and anchovies for both the Chinooks and coho. The coho have been hitting between 20-40 feet and the chinook a little deeper between 60-90. We had a nice coho on Saturday that was close to 10 pounds. The coho have been averaging between 4-7 pounds and the Chinooks between 12-22 pounds. There have been a few nice fish showing up in Howe Sound. Fish in the 15-30 pound range have been hitting anchovies between 90-170 feet. Hole in the Wall is the place to be in July for the Squamish bound chinook. You have to work hard for your bites though! The Gulf Islands have still been consistent for Chinooks in the 10-20 pound range. Thrasher Rock, the Grande and Whalebone have been the spots. Give us a call or send us an email for any charter info! Jeff/Jason Bon Chovy Fishing Report, Downtown Vancouver, July 17, 2007Summer is definitely here to stay now. We have enjoyed some amazing hot weather over the last couple weeks! West Vancouver produced some nice coho and chinook over the last couple weeks. The Anchovies and white hootchies have been the ticket for that shoreline. The coho have been ranging in the 4-6 pound range and the nicer chinook have been in the 14-20 pound range. We have found the flood tide has been more productive towards the Cap Mouth and Ambelside and the Fisheries/Pink Palace has been producing on the ebb tide. There have been a few nice big chinooks off the T-10 marker as well. On our 8 hour and 10 hour trips we have continued to run over to the Gulf Islands to fish for Chinooks. The fishing continues to be consistent with fish being landed on every trip over to that side this month. One of our guests from South Africa landed a nice 22-pound chinook there this past week. The fish have averaged 12-17 pounds on that side. Lingcod fishing has been good as well with fish in the 10-18 pound range. Howe Sound has been kicking out a few springs as well. We have had reports of fish being landed into the high twenties this week. You have to work hard for your bites though. Call us to book a charter! BON CHOVY SALTWATER REPORT, JUNE 30, 2007The local fishery has started to rebound after a lull for the entire month of June. We are starting to see the first of the big Squamish chinook show up in Howe Sound. This fishery seems to really perk up around the first of July every year. These fish average between 18 and 30 pounds. Areas to concentrate on for these fish include Hole in the Wall, Hutt Island, Tunstall, and upper Howe Sound. These fish tend to be fairly deep 80-170 feet. There has also been a lot of undersize in the Vancouver Harbour/Point Grey area mixed in with the odd decent fish. We are still awaiting the first push of Coho off West Van, should be any day now! During the last few weeks we have been running over to the Gulf Islands on our charters and have had good success off Thrasher Rock and the Grande. The fish over on that side have been averaging in the mid teens, real nice quality. There is still lots of bait on that side and fishing has continued to be consistent for Chinooks. The Gulf Islands have had a really strong year for Chinooks so far. Call us to book a charter! Vancouver BC Saltwater Report, June 12, 2007June is typically the transitional period in our local fishery in Vancouver. The first big push of Coho's along the West Van shoreline should be around the 25th of June. The big run of Squamish Chinooks should also begin to stage in local waters in late June as well. In the meantime we have been fishing primarily over on the Gulf Islands side of the Strait. Fishing on that side has remained consistent as it has all spring. There are good numbers of chinook in the 8-20 pound range . There was a couple in the mid 20’s caught last week as well. We have been fishing between 80 feet and 180 feet depending on which spot we are fishing. Chovies, coyotes, and green splatterback hootchies have all been producing. Crabbing in Vancouver harbour has been awesome. Summer is almost here and we should see the first big batch of migratory fish in the next couple weeks! Tight Lines Jason/Jeff Vancouver Saltwater Report, May 30, 2007We are getting close to the time where the fishery goes into a transition period here in the local Vancouver waters. The winter and spring feeder fish will start to disperse out of the local area and the larger migratory fish will start moving in. There has been some nice sized fish taken over the last month and a half already. We are still fishing the harbour and the south side of Bowen with moderate success. We have been hooking 1-2 legal fish a morning over the last 10 days or so. Mixed in there are also a few undersize chinook to keep the rods moving. We have been finding fish between 50 and 120 feet on our riggers. Anchovies, cop cars, and green glows have all been working. The key is finding the fish. In the harbour good bets are the Bell Buoy, Jericho, the QB, and the Cap Mouth on the high slack. The Gulf Islands have been fishing really well over the last few weeks. On every trip over to that side, except for one, we have landed multiple chinook salmon. There has been some nice sized fish as well. We managed to boat a 22 pounder last week as well as a few in the mid teens. Some real good quality. We found our larger fish around Thrasher Rock. The Grande, Whalebone, and the Waterfall have been good as well. We have been fishing deeper on that side of the Strait. We have been runing the riggers from 100-190 feet down, depending on where we are fishing and where the bait is. Coyotes, anchovies, and the splatterback hootchie have been working well. To fish the Gulf Islands a 8 hour or 10 hour charter is needed to account for the running time. There has been the odd early coho already taken so lets hope that the coho fishery off West Van starts off strong in the third week of June! Please call or email us for any charter info!!! Jeff/Jason Bon Chovy, Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report, April 20thThe last couple weeks have seen the focus of the local fishery switch from the usual winter haunts out to Georgia Strait, the South Side of Bowen in particular. The last couple weeks have seen pretty reasonable numbers of fish out in the Strait. The majority of the legal fish have been ranging in size from 9-13 pounds with a few fish caught in the high teens and low twenties. The key to this fishery is to cover ground, read the tidelines, listen to the chatter on the radio, and be patient. Over the last couple days there has been some decent activity on the low slack, 1-2 miles off Cowan Point. We have been running cop car and green glow coyotes, anchovies, and purple haze hootchies behind flashers over the last couple weeks. The harbour is still holding some fish as well. We picked up a nice one off the Cap Mouth yesterday evening on the high slack. I have also heard of the odd fish coming from the Jericho/mile markers side. Crabbing has been excellent in the harbour. The Gulf Islands have also seen some pretty solid action over the last couple weeks. Thrasher Rock and the Grande have been the hotspots. Good numbers of fish in the 8-15 pound range have been reported daily. With some calm water the Gulf Islands make for a great day trip! Call us to book a spring time charter on our Grady White! Jason/Jeff VANCOUVER BC FISHING REPORTBON CHOVY FISHING REPORT - MARCH 27, 2007 Well after much anticipation, we have purchased our newer, bigger Grady White Gulfstream. Now we can accomadate up to 5 people in comfort. The Gulfstream is truly an awesome fishing boat. With a 9'3 beam she is extremely wide and stable. Our 4 stroke 9.9 trolling motor is smoke free and can dial our trolling speed to a tee. We have added a GPS plotter and a new fish finder to complete our electronics package. Should be a good season with the new boat! To the fishing side of things! We have definately missed out on some quality fish over the last couple weeks. There have been numerous reports of fish in the high teens and twenties coming in. There was even one in the mid thirties caught up Howe Sound. There have been some decent fish hanging of the Cap Mouth as usual on the last few hours of the flood tide. April is the start of the fishery off the South end of Bowen Island. Fish congregate in the area til early June. This is typically one of the more exciting fisheries of the year as there is quite often some good quality fish to 20 pounds mixed in with the standard 10 pounders. The Gulf Islands usually really heats up and gets going this month as well. We offer 8 and 10 hour trips over to Gabriola. There have been good reports coming from that way as well! As we progress into spring, coyotes and hootchies behind flashers will still pick up fish. Anchovy quite often becomes the ticket as we progress into spring. Call us to book a spring charter on the newer, bigger Grady! Tight Lines Jeff Jason 604.763.5460 BON CHOVY SALMON FISHING REPORT MARCH 7, 2007This last week has had a great combination of nice mild days, good winter Chinook action, and really good crabbing! Fish has remained very consistent for anglers venturing out into English Bay. There has been good reports come from all over the bay. The fish as per usual in winter are hitting a wide array of different gear. We have been using our old stand-bys (green glow coyote and purple haze hootchies) with good success. The fish have been averaging in the 9-13 pound range with a few in the mid teens to low twenties caught this week. We managed a nice one around 16 pounds late last week. Some great quality for this time of year. Productive depths have been between 80 and 140 feet. As we progress into spring it might be wise to start shallowing up some gear as there is sure to be the odd one cruising a little higher in water column. We have had success off the Ambelside/Cap Mouth, the QB, as well as Jericho. Good news as well!! We have purchased our new boat! It is a Grady White Gulfstream! This boat is truly a fishing machine! Now we can comfortably accomadate up to 5 guests in comfort! Call us to book a charter! VANCOUVER FISHING REPORT FEBRUARY 09/07Finally we are seeing some typical Vancouver winter weather over the last month! This has meant people have taken the protective armour off their boats and started fishing again- including us! The last few weeks have been really consistent in the harbour. There is now a good mix of undersize and keepers throughout English Bay. The standard winter tacks have all been kicking out winter springs. Jericho, the QB marker, West Van/Ambelside have all been good. This past week we have been doing well on the last couple hours of the flood and the first hour of the ebb of the Cap Mouth. We have managed to get a couple in the low to mid teens of the Cap in the last few days. Fishing fairly close to bottom with coyote spoons, purple haze hootchies, and bait have been working. There have also been some decent fish picked up on the backside of Bowen Island as well. There have been fish reportedly into the mid 20's caught. We managed to head over to Tunstall earlier in February and were rewarded with a 20 pounder ourselves. Good Luck Jeff/Jason |
