Vancouver Winter Chinook Report, December 16th
Our winter chinook salmon season is now in full swing. Over the last week there has been decent numbers of fish in the 5 to 15 pound range. The majority of the action right now is from undersize fish in the 20 to 24 inch range, but there is more legal fish in the mix every day. As we progress into December, we should see the ration of legal to undersize fish increase dramatically.
Vancouver Harbour has produced the best results so far this year. The West Vancouver shoreline has produced the majority of the larger fish so far. There has been fish in the middle of Vancouver harbour as well, but they tend to be on the smaller side. Most Vancouver Harbour winter chinook are taking by scraping bottom with your gear in 80 to 130 feet of water. We have not heard of many fish coming from Howe Sound so far this winter. In recent years, Howe Sound has picked up for winter fish in late December and January.
Small spoons in the 2.75 to 4 inch range have been the most productive as per usual in the winter. Gibbs G Force and Silver Horde Kingfisher Spoons have been the ticket for most anglers. Our favourite spoons have been the Irish Cream, Kitchen Sink, No Bananas and Homeland Security. We have been running our spoons behind standard Gibbs Glow Green and Chartreuse Highliner Flashers. We have also had some really good luck with the new Gibbs UV Lemon Lime Flashers.
We have been very busy in the last couple weeks renovating our new bigger office/retail space on Granville Island. Our new address is 1814 Mast Tower Road on Granville Island. Our boats are still on the same dock as always, but we moved our office about 50 meters. We are right across from the Lobster Man and Finest at Sea. We will have lots more details about our new shop in the New Year....we are excited!
We have charters booked in the next couple weeks and are looking forward to getting out on the water a lot more. It is time to put down the paint brush and get out there to chase those chrome Vancouver Harbour Winter Chinook salmon.
Crabbing has started to pick up in Vancouver Harbour now that the commercial crab season has now closed. We are dropping crab traps on all of our winter chinook salmon charters.
Give us a call or an email to get out on the water! We are open throughout the Christmas Holidays!
Tight Lines and Happy Holidays!
